Reading Essentials: A three-and-a-half-year old’s list for the younger lot

Anya Selvarajan is 3.5 years old and like any dedicated bookworm, she has trouble stopping when asked to pick her favourites. Our correspondent, Rajeswari Devadass made sure that the list was entirely Anya’s and that she stopped at 14 (we secretly wish that she hadn’t). The Gruffalo  and Ranganna tee shirts that you see in the picture, along with the bookshelf were done by the very talented Rajeswari.  Now it is for you to decide which is more endearing – the list or the picture.
  1. Zoe and Beans – The Magic Hoop – by Chloe Inkpen , Mick Inkpen
    “Because Zoe has 2 ponytails”
  2. My Garden – Kevin Henkes
“Because flowers go blooming and blooming and there are chocolate rabbits”
  3. This is not my Hat : Jon Klassen
“Because Small fish not giving hat to big fish.”
  4. A sick day for Amos McGhee : Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead
“Because Elephant walks on the road.”
  5. Chopsticks  – Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Scott Magoon
    “Because they are friends.
  6. Bink and Gollie – Two for One – (Whack a Duck )Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee

  7. Dont Let the Pigeon drive the bus by Mo Willems
“Because Pigeon keeps telling “I want to drive the bus”
  8. Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
    “Because I like moon.”
  9. Again by Emily Gravett.
“Because Dragon asks Mumma to read book again and again.”
  10. Sleep like a Tiger – Mary Logue and Pamela Zagarenski
“Because Girl doesn’t want to go to sleep.”
  11. Beekle – Dan Santat
“Because he is waiting for friend to pick him up and we make Color color Beekles with clay (play dough)”
  12. Oliver by Birgitta Sif

  14. Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons -Eric Litwin and James Dean

Anya, a big thank you! That is such a lovely list! We need you to promise that you will come back with more. Rajeswari, with a book-crazy mum like you, it is a miracle that the list stopped at anything short of a hundred! Thank you for growing a bookworm!
